We Need Certainty
None of us know how many more weeks or months we will be in this state of uncertainty, apprehension, and threat as it relates to the Coronavirus. However, I do think it’s safe to say that it is our new “normal” for a while, and it would be wise to embrace it as such.
When thinking about our former, “normal” lives, certain things come to mind as universally foundational for our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. These are things such as self-care, getting outside, staying connected with loved ones, laughter and exercise. And, although it is generally a lot easier to weave these things into our lives when life is on an even keel, it is actually when life throws us a curve ball, that we benefit the most. Our well-being is critical to us during stressful times.
So, although your current reality is no doubt dominated by uncertainty, what neuro-scientific research tells us is that what you really need is CERTAINTY in order to have that ever important sense of control and safety. It stands to reason, then, that now more than ever, it is very important that you intentionally create some certainty in your day-to-day routine.
For most of us, personal well-being is founded on a few specific items:
A quality night of sleep
Some form of exercise or body movement
Getting out in nature
Connecting with loved ones
A healthy diet
Equally important may be identifying a few items that you can commit to avoiding- such as staying up late to watch the news, using alcohol, drugs or food to numb out, or isolating yourself from your loved ones.
Do this today! Make a personal commitment to create some certainty in your life today and every day. Develop a daily routine of the things that fill you up, make you feel good, and invigorate you. This will go a long way toward helping you to avoid becoming overrun by hopelessness or fear and to improve your resilience.
Be Well, My Friends!
